Manipulation of an existing crystal form unexpectedly results in interwoven packing networks with pseudo-translational symmetry

چکیده
Nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs) are multimodular enzymes that synthesize a myriad of diverse molecules. Tailoring domains have been co-opted into NRPSs to introduce further variety into nonribosomal peptide products. Linear gramicidin synthetase contains a unique formylation-tailoring domain in its initiation module (F-A-PCP). The structure of the F-A di-domain has previously been determined in a crystal form which had large solvent channels and no density for the minor Asub subdomain. An attempt was made to take advantage of this packing by removing the Asub subdomain from the construct (F-AΔsub) in order to produce a crystal that could accommodate the PCP domain. In the resulting crystal the original packing network was still present, but a second network with the same packing and almost no contact with the original network took the place of the solvent channels and changed the space group of the crystal.

Rhombellanic Crystals and Quasicrystals
Design of some crystal and quasicrystal networks, based on rhombellane tiling,is presented. [1,1,1]Propellane,is a synthesized organic molecule; its hydrogenated form, the bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane,may be represented by the complete bipartite graph K2,3 which is the smallest rhombellane. Topology of translational and radial structures involving rhombellanes is described in terms of vertex symbol, c...
متن کاملEntropic crystal-crystal transitions of Brownian squares.
When a monolayer of hard microscale square platelets, produced lithographically, is osmotically concentrated in a flat plane to raise the particle area fraction Φ(A), an order-order transition occurs between a hexagonal rotator crystal and a rhombic crystal. Strikingly, phases having fourfold symmetry are not observed at any Φ(A). The rhombic lattice angle α increases continuously with Φ(A), as...
متن کاملA novel characterization of organic molecular crystal structures for the purpose of crystal engineering.
A novel analytical approach is proposed for the characterization of organic molecular crystal structures where close packing is an important factor. It requires the identification of a unique reference axis within the crystal, along which three-dimensional space is divided into close-packed blocks (CPB) and junction zones (JZ). The degree of close packing along the reference axis is quantified ...
متن کاملMetallic Phase with Long-Range Orientational Order and No Translational Symmetry
We report herein the existence of a metallic solid which diffracts electrons like a single crystal but has point group symmetery rn35 (icosahedral) which is inconsistent with lattice translations. If the specimen is rotated through the angles of this point group (Fig. 1), selected-area electron diffraction patterns clearly display the six fivefold, ten threefold, and fifteen twofold axes charac...
متن کاملLog-Normal and Mono-Sized Particles’ Packing into a Bounded Region
Many systems can be modeled with hard and various size spheres, therefore packing and geometrical structures of such sets are of great importance. In this paper, rigid spherical particles distributed in different sizes are randomly packed in confined spaces, using a parallel algorithm. Mersenne Twister algorithm was used to generate pseudorandom numbers for initial coordination of particles. Di...
